Harald Wentsch, Chief Executive Officer of OpenTAS, has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Tank Storage Influencers by leading industry publication Storage Terminals Magazine. The title honors leaders who are actively shaping the digital and strategic transformation of the global tank terminal industry.
Since taking over as Chief Executive Officer of the company in 2023, Wentsch has been the driving force behind a clear strategic repositioning of OpenTAS. The successful separation from Implico and the establishment of the OpenTAS Group as an independent entity in 2024 enabled the company to focus entirely on its industry-leading Terminal Management Solution (TMS), end-to-end consulting services and the ongoing development of open digital ecosystems for the global supply chain of energy and chemicals.
In his interview in Storage Terminals Magazine, Wentsch addresses the challenges that are currently defining the industry: safeguarding the security of supply, navigating geopolitical instability on a regional and global scale, responding to developments in the field of alternative energy sources and strengthening cybersecurity in order to safeguard increasingly vulnerable infrastructures.
“The industry is evolving, and it’s asking serious questions of the technology currently on offer,” he states.
The answer, Wentsch asserts, lies in digitalization, software standardization, artificial intelligence and above all IT/OT convergence.
“IT/OT convergence is the next logical step in the digital transformation – I believe it is the key to a prosperous future for the industry.”
OpenTAS addresses this complexity through an open, modular and scalable IT ecosystem. Standardized technology stacks accelerate development, enhance cybersecurity and enable cloud-based services, AI-assisted optimization and IoT-driven monitoring. The objective is clear: to create process transparency from one end of the operational chain to the other while eliminating vendor lock-in and ensuring terminal operations are future-proof.
Regional dynamics are a decisive factor here. While Europe is leading the way in pursuing decarbonization and alternative energy sources such as hydrogen, biofuels and synthetic fuels, other markets around the globe are focusing instead on infrastructural stability and regulatory alignment. In this context, IT systems must be able to map transformation trajectories while reflecting and responding to specific regional conditions.
Wentsch also highlights a broader cultural shift in the interview. “The conversation is no longer about oil and gas, but rather the many exciting opportunities on the horizon,” he states.
With an international and diverse team in place and a strong commitment to the New World of Work philosophy, OpenTAS is now well positioned as a forward-looking partner for both customers and the next generation of talent.
Wentsch’s place among the Top 100 Leaders not only serves as an acknowledgement of his leadership but also OpenTAS’s global standing as a major TMS provider. According to the latest ARC study, OpenTAS ranks among the three largest suppliers of terminal management systems worldwide, with a strong EMEA presence and an ever-growing market share in Latin America.
With a clear commitment to open platforms, intelligent business process automation and the captivating vision to make the autonomous terminal a reality, OpenTAS is continuing to set the pace when it comes to establishing a resilient, digitally empowered supply chain of energy and chemicals.
